The Start and the End

In an interview for Border Crossings, Amy Sillman said that she wanted to address the lack of writing that exists about the process of making art improvisationally. She went on to say that she was trying to write about an “uncomfortable, awkward, blind spot, where you’re between doing things and making things and thinking about things”. I want to justify to my friends and peers that improvised decisions that involve picking up materials that are nearby and worn and used and changing them until they tell you something about yourself is valid, and is also relevant to all of us.

We can gain a lot from surrendering ourselves to a process, and surrendering to impulsive decisions too, when the art has been improvised, and you can see their journey from the start to the end, it reminds you that nothing is fixed or permanent.
